Intended as a teaching tool, the LEED Gold certified Math & Science Center uses didactic signs to point out the many sustainable features of this building. Students are introduced through their experience of the building sustainable design concepts such as use of borrowed light, passive solar gain, rainwater harvesting, geothermal heating systems, and the use of recycled materials. Students also learn how the building supports green living practices and the environmental impacts of drinking water from a fountain, being conscientious about opening and closing windows, and turning lights on and off. “Green screens” provide live indicators on the building’s energy consumption.
